Organized Chaos

Currently sitting in my kitchen is enough cake to feed 150 people.  Two are fashioned into the skeletons which will become a River Rail (Ok, a bus! It's a bus on a track) The third cake is covered in fondant and is getting details added.  But not finishing details.  The beginning details.  Like doors.  And windows.  The whole thing is covered in windows!  And they are all due tomorrow at 10 am.  And I ran out of icing.  And I have to write on them (I kind of suck at that).  Hey Aud, how about that fondant lesson sometime around 10 pm tonight? 'Cause I'm pretty sure I will still be working on them then!
And work is crazy.  Like crazy crazy.  You know, the get-called-into-a-meeting-to-find-out-that-three-weeks-worth-of-work-needs-to-be-done-in-two-days crazy (and a million things need to be printed. What? Printing takes time?  All these timelines need to be moved so we can account for printing? Then you have one day. Get started! Oh wait, we don't have all the information you need to get started? Well, good luck tomorrow! HA!)
Yeah, that's my week.  The first week of November.  Wait, did I just say November? Isn't November National Novel Writing Month?  Better known as NaNoWriMo?  Or better known as the month Kelli foolishly agreed to write an 50,000 word novel in 30 days? Well, that's only 1,667 words per day. I mean Psssshhh, you can do that standing on your head.  What? It's November 3rd and you haven't started?  Well, that's only 1,852 words per day.  I mean, it only took you a month of lunches to write the beginning of your book.  Wait? You only managed to write 3,100 words during that month of lunches?  Isn't that like, two days worth in NaNoWriMo time?
Hmmmm.
Not good, Kelli.  Not good.
So, here's the plan, go home tonight and write!  Write your little heart out and you- What?  Oh, right, the cakes.  OK.  Well, tomorrow night then.  Yeah, go home and start writing 1,923 words per day.  OK.  That's the plan!  You can do it!
What? Are you kidding me?  Another cake!  When?  November 28th?  Fine. That's an even 2,000 words per day.  I mean, totally doable, right?  That's barely 9 page pages.  Easy Peasy.
Hmm, November 28th?  Why does that date sound familiar?  Like it's close to something? Right! Thanksgiving!  Well, That's a holiday!  One can not be expected to write on a holiday.  2,083 words per day.  I hate to say this, but you're pushing it.  What! What! You want the day BEFORE Thanksgiving off as well for cooking?  Well, no, I don't think Thanksgiving would be the same without your pecan chocolate chip pie.  But really?  I'm sorry, I'm putting my foot down.  That's entirely - stop crying! OK, fine! 2,173 Words Per Day! Are you happy?
What are you doing blogging?  You should be writing a book.  You know this is 478 words, that's like 1/5 of what you need to write each day! You could have been writing a novel!

Um, yeah, so if you don't see me around, it's because I'm off somewhere arguing with myself about a book I may or may not be writing!

  1. Okay, I have actually written the first two days because I know later something will come up and I'll falter and, really, I was all Kelli's going to think I'm a wimp if I don't show up for this.

Here's what I'm finding (in my whole TWO days of experience, I know, I should be writing a book about how to NaNoWriMo or something because I'm an expert). Anyway, what I'm finding is...it is both easier and harder than I thought it would be. It's harder because I didn't have every single character plotted out and as I'm writing I am throwing in new ones I hadn't even thought of before. So it is hard to decide something like a character's name/attributes on the fly. It is for me anyway, particularly because I'm way specific about names.

But it has also been easier than I thought it would be. Both nights I've sat down, cranked the classical music, and stutter started but once I got going, after about 200 words, I was golden. The trick for me is (and this is really, really hard) to not look back. No reading what I've written (unless I'm in the middle of a long sentence and forgot where I was going).

The first night took me about 2 hours. The second night had less dialogue (I suck at writing dialogue) and took 1 1/2 hours.

I know you can do it and I bet some night you'll get on a roll and completely obliterate the current deficit you have.

  2. Sorry, I am comment highjacking but whatever you do, DO NOT go on to Twitter and search #NaNoWriMo. Because then you'll see all these people saying things like "Oh I just wrote 5,762 words today, don't I rock." And then you'll think "yeah, you do rock and I obviously suck when I had to push myself to the brink to reach 1,700." Speaking from experience, don't do that.
